Moving house as a student in Leeds happens at least once a year — and often more. Whether you're moving from halls into your first student house, shuffling between Headingley addresses, or heading home for the summer, a bit of organisation makes the whole process much less stressful. Here's our complete checklist.
6 Weeks Before Moving
- Book your van — don't leave this to the last minute, especially for late June/early July (end-of-year) and September (move-in). Slots fill up fast across Headingley and Hyde Park.
- Give notice on your current tenancy — check your contract for the required notice period.
- Start collecting boxes and packing materials — supermarkets often have free boxes if you ask.
- Redirect your post — Royal Mail's redirect service takes a few days to set up.
2 Weeks Before
- Start packing non-essentials — books, out-of-season clothes, decorations. Label every box with the room it's going to.
- Take meter readings at your current address. Photo them with your phone and share with your landlord.
- Notify your bank, university, GP, and HMRC of your new address.
- Arrange contents insurance for the new address — many students have no cover at all.
- Confirm your booking with the van company and double-check the address details.
Moving Day
- Pack an essentials box the night before — phone charger, toiletries, change of clothes, snacks, important documents. This is the last box loaded and first box unloaded.
- Disassemble furniture that needs it — beds, flat-pack wardrobes, large desks. This is usually quicker than trying to manoeuvre them whole.
- Clear all storage — loft, under-bed, behind wardrobe. These are the areas students most commonly forget.
- Check every room, cupboard, and drawer before the van leaves.
- Take a full photo walkthrough of both properties — current and new — to document the condition.
- Return keys promptly on the date specified in your contract.
Moving Day Tips Specific to Leeds Student Areas
Headingley
Parking on Ash Road, Cardigan Road, and surrounding streets is on-street only. If you can, organise for housemates to move cars the night before to create space near your door. Check whether your house has front or rear ginnel access — large furniture often has to go through the back of back-to-back terraces.
Hyde Park
Several streets in Hyde Park are one-way. Let your van driver know which end of the street to approach from. Royal Park Road and Brudenell Road are the main through routes; residential streets branch off them.
City Centre Halls
Most city centre student halls have a dedicated loading bay and goods lift. Book a time slot with the building management in advance — these fill up fast during September Freshers move-in.
After You've Moved In
- Take meter readings at the new property straight away.
- Check all appliances and report any issues to your landlord within 24 hours.
- Set up your council tax exemption (full-time students are exempt — register with Leeds City Council).
- Register at a local GP — Leeds has high demand and waiting lists, so register early.
- Update your details at the university (important for bursaries, accommodation records, and emergency contacts).
Common Student Moving Mistakes in Leeds
Booking too late during peak periods — late June to early July and September are the two busiest weeks of the year for Leeds student moves. If you leave booking a van until a few days before, you may find limited availability or end up paying more.
Underestimating how much you have — a student room holds more than you think when you factor in under-bed storage, bedside tables stuffed with books, and the kitchen items you bought in freshers' week. The LWB van is usually right for a single room, but it's worth measuring or estimating volume before booking.
Not checking tenancy end dates against move-in dates — there's often a gap between when your old tenancy ends and your new one starts. This may mean a night or two at home or in temporary accommodation. Plan for this rather than leaving it to the last minute.
